For Matt and Kim Bird, Seward is more than where they own a business. It is home.
Matt began spending summers in Seward in 1997 and moved here year-round in 2001. Kim has lived here nearly her entire life. Together, they took over Seward Heavy Industrial Power in 2010, continuing a business that has now served Seward and communities across Alaska for more than 25 years.
This September, Seward Heavy Industrial Power is stepping up as Seward Community Foundation’s Business Matchmaker, matching donations to the Seward Community Foundation Fund up to $1,000.
For Matt, supporting SCF is another way to give back to a community that has given so much to his own family.
Providing a Service People Can Count On
Seward Heavy Industrial Power specializes primarily in marine engine and transmission repair and service, and also supplies marine engines, generators, batteries, filters, hydraulic hoses and fittings.
Asked what motivates him as a business owner, Matt’s answer comes back to reliability.
“Providing a reliable and honest service to our community,” he said. “I recognize that many of my customers need a working boat to earn an income, and I do my very best to keep things running as smoothly as possible.”
That sense of responsibility extends beyond the doors of the business.
Seeing the Impact of Local Giving
Matt and Kim have seen firsthand how local nonprofit organizations strengthen life in Seward.
“The Seward Community Foundation has supported so many programs that our family has benefited from over the years,” Matt said. “They pour into our community, building opportunities for all ages.”
He pointed to Seward Area Hospice and the Seward Tsunami Swim Club, two organizations that have received SCF grant funding over the years and have personally impacted the Bird family.
“Seward Heavy Industrial Power is proud and excited to support SCF and their vision for the future.”
Showing Up for One Another
When asked what role local businesses should play in strengthening a community, Matt described something Seward residents know well.
“The community of Seward is like no other. If there is a need, complete strangers line up to help.”
For Matt, businesses are part of that same network of people looking out for one another.
“Showing up for others strengthens a community, and local businesses providing reliable, consistent, and excellent service only adds to that.”
It is a philosophy rooted in gratitude.
“Kim and I love this town,” Matt said. “We are grateful to have raised our children here, and grateful for all the people that have poured into their lives over the years.”
Their goal is simple: return some of that generosity.
“Seward Heavy will continue to do its very best to reciprocate that generosity and provide a consistent, reliable service for our community.”
