In 2016, the Seward Senior Center received a $5,400 competitive grant from SCF for a project that took place during the 2016-2017 school year. This grant allowed the Senior Center to provide senior citizens with tablets for a discounted price after they had completed the training program.
Seward High School seniors took on the challenge this past school year to become teachers themselves by instructing senior citizens on how to comprehend and operate a tablet over the course of six weeks, with classes held twice a week for one hour.
The favorite success story was when a senior learned how to set up a Facebook account and within a week, she was friended by her high school sweetheart. He even posted a winter formal photo from 1963 on her Facebook page. She was so delighted to share this story, with tears of joy in her eyes.
Twenty-eight Seward senior citizens graduated from this program during the 2017 school year. Funding for this grant came from the Seward Community Foundation Unrestricted Fund and the Frank Dieckgraeff Fund.
